tumblr you will probably want to read this
in english class today we were discussing edmund spenser’s amoretti sonnet 11
it compares being in love to being in a war; the speaker says he “daily [seeks and sues] for peace”, but the woman he loves is so cruel that she continually rejects him
this is a classic example of petrarchan love poetry, where the abject poet is repeatedly rejected by a perfect but cold woman, usually with eyes like stars, hair like gold, roses blooming in her cheeks, etc. (cliches, yes— but these cliches were invented by the petrarchan poets)
i was talking in class about how the speaker certainly does feel entitled to this woman! he goes on and on about how she “doth herself address to battle” and “her fell intent pursueth” and other phrases to make it seem like SHE’S attacking HIM, even though all she’s doing is, y’know, existing
and my english teacher says, “have any of you been on tumblr?”
we just. look at each other.
my english teacher says, “you should see how they talk on there about their celebrities. ‘your face is unfair!’ ‘life ruiner!’ ‘i hate your perfect everything!’”
we just. look at each other.
congratulations, tumblr. you are continuing a six hundred and eighty five year old tradition of ridiculous english love poetry. keep on keeping on.
