Imagine you were dying. Imagine you were afraid and a long way from home in terrible pain. Just when you thought it couldn’t get worse, you looked up and saw the face of the Devil himself.

Matt Smith might be known for being a goofy Doctor, but never forget his dark side. He does it so very very well and it is always there.
(GIF set based on one of my very first posts.)
They discuss this in an Eighth Doctor audio, in the time leading up to the Time War, when the Doctor meets Susan again.
Susan: Grandfather…
Doctor: Do you remember that time - long, long time ago - we were escaping from a bunch of murderous cavemen. You, me, and Barbara… And that wounded man was holding us up, remember that? And for one moment, just… I entertained the possibility. I picked up a rock, and—
Susan: But you didn’t do it, did you? You didn’t kill that man!
Doctor: Only because Chesterton stopped me. Direct action, that’s what that was. Maybe I should be more like that now. Maybe I’ve gone soft.
It is a man’s own mind, not his enemy or foe, that lures him to evil ways.
Dependence
This is very different from the usual fare.
A little dark speculation.
Thanks to Megan for clearing the thoughts.
Thanks to Dani for letting me ruin her headcanon.
Disclaimer: I don’t own Doctor Who. Or the brilliant, nuanced, fallible characters.
Dependence
Broken soldiers seek mending. Some cannot cope with the civilian life. Some become apathetic or drown in drink. Others seek a new fight or a new cause to follow.
The Doctor found Rose.

The Last Great Time War (requested by anon)
With the exception of a very few survivors, the Time Lords and the Daleks disappeared from time and space. Gallifrey was destroyed in a silent flash as bright as a sun. Its annihilation was so profound it stretched deep into the past and far into the future. The Cruciform fell when Gallifrey was destroyed. The blast was so powerful the universe convulsed as planets, systems and galaxies were obliterated. (x)
#let’s not talk about this #let’s not talk about the planet populated by actual gods who could hold all of time and space in their hands #of a race that travesed dimensions with a skip and a jump and a laugh that echoed through universes #whose joy at their power curdled into greed #and of the doctor himself; the lonely violent god forced to look upon his own kind #the man who swallowed the abyss within himself with the knowledge that it would weigh within him for all eternity #who put out the stars before they burned out the rest of the galaxies (thymoss)
#forever in love with the rise and rise and terrible fall of the fêted empire of gallifrey #planet of the gods; of the timelords who controlled all of time and kept order throughout the galaxy; a planet of sweeping beauty and the he #height of civilization #plunged into blood and genocide and the actual platonic ideal of warfare; #a war that raged so wide it encompassed time itself; a war that threatened not just existence but memory in the most literal of ways #and the one time lord who took it inside himself and made of himself the most terrible #who destroyed everything; who scorched and salted the earth of his own race that the universe might rise from the ashes #the lonely terrible god #doctor who #no one man should have all that power #they blink and reality shivers (okayophelia)
go sit in a corner and think about what you’ve done.
